Guava – a highly popular tropical fruit that is native to Mexico, central and south America Guava which over the centuries, adopted as a crop in subtropical and tropical Asia and some tropical parts of the United States like Florida, and North and South Carolina. This tasty fruit is known to be a good source of vitamins C and A, potassium and dietary fiber. Guava or Bayabas as we call it in Tagalog… Bayawas in Bicol, have edible leaves and even its barks. They are used in traditional medicine for their medicinal properties.
The Philippines grows many types of guavas, varying from small to fairly large sizes. Depending on what classification a guava belongs to, its flesh also vary in colors from green to yellow, to pink or even purple when ripe. Ingredients: 4-6 servings
16-20 medium sized ripe guavas
1 (13.66 oz) large can of coconut milk
1 cup of white sugar
1/4 tsp of salt
1 cup of cooked Tapioca pearls
1-2 cups of water
Preparation:
- Wash and peel off guavas, cut them in halves or quarters, then remove the seeds using a spoon or ice cream scoop. Set them aside.
- Heat up a sauce pan at medium temperature, pour a can of coconut milk on the pan as it heats up. Use a portion of the 2 cups of water to get remaining coconut milk that’s left from its can.
- Leave the coconut milk to boil while occassionally stirring or at least 3-5 minutes. Add remaining water to dilute with the coconut milk, stir to incorporate mixture and leave it to simmer until it slightly thickens. Stir occasionally.
- Apply salt, followed by the sugar. Stir to combine, then add the guava slices, mix them to incorporate all ingredients, then leave it to simmer for 1-3 minutes.
- Add cooked Tapioca pearls, thoroughly combine and continue to simmer. Add more water if desired, depending on how thick you want the sauce will be. Simmer for another minute or so, or until guava slices and Tapioca pearls are fully cooked.
- Remove from the heat. Serve hot or cold for dessert or snack. This Dulce Guava recipe is truly delicious!
Tip: Try applying a small amount Pandan or vanilla syrup into this yummy Minatamis na Bayabas as an alternative.
