The Philippines is one of the largest tuna exporters from Asia. Tuna or Tulingan as it is called in Tagalog, is one of the most popular seafood dishes often served for lunch or dinner in almost every Filipino household. There are 3 types of Philippine Tuna, there’s the yellow fin, the bigeye, then the skipjack tuna. In Japan, tuna is used for many recipes. One of their very popular tuna dish is their “Sushi”, besides many.
Filipinos oftentimes just simply clean and slice them in cubes, season the Tulingan or Tuna with salt and pepper, and fry them until crispy golden brown, they are served with steamed rice. Filipinos enjoy dipping fried tuna into spicy vinegar and salt prior to consumption. For us, nothing more simpler than that, is satisfying enough for lunch or dinner. But that’s not the only Tuna recipe we have, of course.
Janis’s Garlic Tuna recipe on the other hand, is sautéed in generous amount of chopped garlic and sliced onions, seasoned it with soy sauce, then simmered until Tuna is done. A selected group of vegetables were sautéed with olive oil and spices for the side dish. It’s then served with steamed rice.
Ingredients: 3-4 servings
3-4 pieces filleted tuna
6-8 cloves chopped garlic
1 medium sliced onions
4 tbsp. soy sauce
1/2 cup string beans, sliced in halves
1/2 cup julienned carrots
1/2 cup chopped cabbage
2 tbsp. garlic sauce
4-6 tbsp. olive oil
salt & pepper to season
1 cup water
Cooking Procedure:
- For tuna preparation, wash and dry tuna filet, season with salt and pepper. Heat 3 tbsp. or more of olive oil and sauté a half portion of the sliced onions and most of the garlic (leftovers will be used for the veggies). Stir occasionally for 2 minutes.
- Add the tuna next, stir ingredients to combine them evenly. Apply some water to let tuna and bring it to boil for about 5-8 minutes or until tuna is cooked.
- Add soy sauce to the mix. Simmer for at least 3 more minutes, then set it aside while keeping it warm prior to serving.
- For the Sautéed veggies, simply wash and process carrots, cabbage and string beans accordingly. Heat up the remaining olive oil on a clean pan.
- Sautee the remaining onions and garlic on olive oil. Add enough water to create a small amount of vegetable sauce. Add soy sauce and let it simmer while stirring occasionally for 2-3 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper if desired. Remove from heat. Serve this palatable Garlic Tuna & Sautéed Vegetables hot, with steamed rice. Bon Appetit!
Tip: For a more flavorful tasting Garlic Tuna & Sautéed Vegetables, add a small chunk of solid butter with olive oil when sautéing ingredients.
