Orange Chicken has originated from Mainland China, which consists mainly of chopped fried chicken pieces, coated with a thickened or caramelized orange-flavored chili sauce. This sweet and tangy Chinese-inspired recipe has been popularized by Panda Express, a well-known Chinese fast food chain in the United States, and perhaps around the world. Over time, many have adopted such delicious recipe and has become a household favorite to many. Others have learned to create their own homemade orange chicken recipes, and Millie just happened to be one of them.
Millie’s delicious, homemade orange chicken recipe is made with chicken crispy fried chicken cubes, coated with fresh orange juice, stir-fried with onion cubes, bell peppers, snow peas and spices until sauce thickens to perfection. It’s a Chinese-inspired, delicious chicken recipe for you to try at home.
Ingredients: 4-6 servings
6 pieces of Skinless, boneless breast Chicken in cubes
2 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
Cooking oil for frying
2 tbsp. garlic powder
salt & pepper to taste
1 red bell pepper, cut in small squares
1 green bell pepper, cut in small squares
1 medium onion, cut in small squares
1/2 cup cleaned chicaro(snow peas)
Orange Chicken Sauce Ingredients:
1 large clove of chopped garlic
1/2 cup of freshly squeezed, sweet orange juice
1/4 cup of soy sauce
1/4 cup of vinegar
1/2 medium, thin cut onion
2 tbsp. brown sugar
salt & pepper
Cooking Direction:
- Clean and cut raw chicken in medium size cubes. Spread the salt, crushed black peppers and garlic powder onto the chicken cubes, rub all over evenly to combine well. Apply battered eggs and all-purpose flour, then set aside.
- Heat up the cooking oil on a large wok or pan. Set it up on medium-high temperature. When oil is hot enough, fry each of the chicken pieces in small batches until they are golden brown. St them aside.
- Start creating the orange chicken recipe sauce by simply mixing soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and the freshly-squeezed, sweet orange juice together. Whisk to thoroughly combine sauce mixture.
- Sautee chopped onions and garlic. Add the fried chicken cubes, followed with salt and peppers. Gently stir to combine ingredients. Apply the orange chicken sauce then mix together to combine ingredients. Apply more sugar, salt and peppers, if desired.
- Stir fry once more for 1-2 minutes, then add the bell peppers cubes and chicharo(snow peas) slices. Leave it to simmer for 3-5 minutes until bell peppers and chicharo are half-cooked and the orange chicken sauce thickens. Serve this delicious, homemade orange chicken recipe, hot, with steamed rice. Note: If you prefer an exact Panda Express style orange chicken recipe, you can use their ready-mix orange chicken recipe sauce, available in bottles sold at the grocery stores. You can also apply pineapple chunks into the mix, if desired.
