Filipino cuisine is known for its amazingly flavorful dishes, but many are meat-heavy, making it difficult for vegetarians to enjoy the country’s culinary offerings. Sisig, traditionally made with pig’s head and liver, has become a popular staple in Filipino cuisine.

Ludwig’s Filipino vegetarian sisig recipe using tokwa or bean curd is not only a delicious and healthy alternative to the traditional meat-based version but also relevant to the Lenten season.
Sisig is a dish commonly associated with Filipino culture and cuisine, and it has become a staple in many households and restaurants nationwide. However, because it is traditionally made with pork, it is not a suitable dish for those observing Lent.

This vegetarian version of sisig, made with tokwa or bean curd, is an excellent option for serving meatless dishes during Lent. It is still packed with bold and authentic flavors typically associated with sisig, but it is made with a plant-based protein source suitable for Lenten abstinence.

In addition to being a suitable dish for Lent, this tokwa sisig recipe also serves as a reminder that meatless dishes can be just as delicious and satisfying as their meat-based counterparts.

Ingredients: 4-6 servings

31/4 cups of tofu (tokwa), cut in small pieces
2 big in sizes, minced red onions
10 pcs. of chopped red hot chilli peppers
2/3 cup of oyster sauce
3/4 cup of Mayonaise
2 tsp. of powdered black pepper
1-2 tsp of salt to taste
1/2 tsp. of chilli flakes or as desired
2 tbsp. of brown sugar
1-2 stems of chopped, green onion chives

Cooking Instructions:

Slice tokwa in small cubes, place them in a bowl and set aside. Chop or mince red onions.

Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the tokwa or bean curd and cook until browned, stirring occasionally. Remove the tokwa or bean curd from the pan and set aside.

In the same pan, sauté the onions for 60 seconds or until the onions are translucent. Add the green chili peppers to the pan and sauté until they are slightly softened.

Apply mayonaise, followed by oyster sauce. Follow up with salt and crushed black pepper. Add the browned tofu (tokwa or bean curd) to the pan and mix to incorporate with the sautéed ingredients.

Let it to simmer for another 3 minutes to allow the tofu or tokwa to fully incorporate. When sauce thickens, garnish this delicious Tofu Sisig on top, then serve this Filipino vegetarian dish hot, with steamed rice!

Note: This vegetarian sisig recipe using tokwa or bean curd is a delicious and healthy alternative to the traditional meat-based version. It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy the bold and flavorful taste of sisig without compromising their vegetarian or plant-based lifestyle. Favorable for many occasions, specially the Lenten season!
