Coleslaw, also known as slaw, is a salad consisting primarily of finely-shredded raw cabbage with a salad dressing, commonly vinaigrette or mayonnaise. In addition to cabbage, coleslaw can contain other vegetables like carrots, onions, or peppers. Some variations might also include fruit like apples or raisins for sweetness.

There are many variations of coleslaw around the world. For example:

American-style coleslaw: Like Millie’s easy to make, homemade, American-style coleslaw, it’s typically done with a mayonnaise-based dressing, sometimes with added buttermilk, and can also include a bit of mustard or horseradish for a bite.

Vinegar-based coleslaws: These are often found in the southern United States and are made with a vinegar-based dressing instead of mayonnaise, which makes them tangy and light.

Creamy coleslaws: Often include sour cream or yogurt in the dressing.

German-style coleslaw: This variation is tangier and can include ingredients like apples and onions and a vinegar-based dressing.

Coleslaw can be served as a side dish, especially with barbecue, fried chicken, or fish and chips. It’s also commonly used as a topping for sandwiches and hot dogs. From a nutritional perspective, coleslaw can be healthy, especially with a light, vinegar-based dressing. Cabbage and other vegetables are high in fiber and various vitamins and minerals. However, if made with a heavy, creamy dressing, it can be higher in calories and fat.

Ingredients: 4-6 servings

Half of a medium-sized fresh raw cabbage
One large carrot
Raisins or dried sweet cranberries, as per your preference (optional)
1 1/2 cups of Best Foods Mayonnaise
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Take half of the medium-sized cabbage and cut it into two pieces. Set one piece aside for later use. Finely shred the other piece of cabbage and place it in a bowl.
  2. Peel the carrot, rinse it thoroughly, and then shred it into medium-sized pieces.
  3. Add the shredded carrot to the bowl of shredded cabbage. If you’d like, add raisins or dried sweet cranberries to the bowl.
  4. Add 1 1/2 cups of Best Foods Mayonnaise to the bowl. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, then stir well to combine. If you find the mixture too dry, feel free to add more mayonnaise.

Once everything is mixed well, place the coleslaw in the refrigerator to chill. It’s best served cold. Enjoy!
Note: A typical American-style coleslaw is usually served with grilled or rotisseri chicken, hamburgers, grilled pork chops or any of your choice!
