It’s one of a few Saba banana snacks that Filipinos love. Sweet and crispy on the outside and soft and sweet in the inside, Turon or Banana Fritters is coated in brown sugar, wrapped in eggroll wrappers, rolled in sugar once more, then fried till it’s perfectly succulent to taste. You can wrap Turon or Banana Fritters with fresh ripe jackfruits, just like Janis’s Turon recipe, or you can simply roll each piece of Saba bananas in sugar prior to wrapping and frying, like this that Millie created.
Ingredients: yields up to 4 fritters
4 pieces of Saba bananas
1 cup brown sugar(white sugar if desired)
4 pieces lumpia wrappers
1 cup cooking oil
Preparation:
- Peel off 4 pieces of ripe Saba bananas. Cut each in halves lengthwise producing up to 8 halves, then set aside.
- Pour a cup of brown sugar on a large bowl. Place each piece of the sliced bananas(one at a time), and roll over the sugar a few times to completely sugar coat bananas evenly.
- Place one of each bananas on a piece of lumpia wrapper. Start folding the first edge of the wrapper pointing towards you, then fold the left and right ends towards the banana fillings.
- Seal it by brushing the open top side of the wrapper with water. Press it tight, enough to secure the fillings inside.
- On a heated oil, carefully drop 1 batch of Turon(banana fritter) and fry. When the bottom side of Turon starts to brown, flip the top side to do the same.
- Sprinkle desired amount of sugar on top of the browned side. The sugar will start to caramelize. When both sides are browned, flip Turon or banana fritters a couple more times to allow the sugar to stick on both sides of the wrapper.
- Remove the first batch when done and repeat the same procedure until all pieces are done. Allow the leftover caramel sugar on the pan to be utilized by the next batch of Turons. You can add more, if desired.
- Transfer fried Turon on a towel covered strainer to drain excess oil prior to serving. Serve warm and enjoy!
Tip: You may cut each banana in halves, or leave them as is. You also, have a choice to make a delicious Turon recipe or Saba Banana Fritters recipe with or without jackfruit slices added. Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of each if desired, prior to serving. Serve as either a snack or dessert.
It starts with boiled ripe Saba bananas, wrapped in lumpia wrapper with sliced ripe jackfruits, fried until golden brown, then sprinkled with powdered sugar on top.
Another way to make Turon is rolling the lumpia wrapper into brown or white sugar prior to frying. Similarly delicious!
